The new no-smoking law that takes effect in Iowa on July 1 impacts virtually all employers with new obligations to comply with under the statute. This sweeping legislation requires signage at nearly every business and workplace across the state.

The Iowa Legislature passed the Smokefree Air Act to protect public health and the health of employees from the dangers of exposure to second-hand smoke. The law prohibits smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces and in some outdoor areas. The ban covers office buildings, factories, warehouses, shopping malls, private offices and all enclosed areas of places of employment, including employer-provided vehicles. It includes all enclosed areas of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, coffee shops and cafeterias. Smoking is also prohibited in outdoor sports arenas, stadiums, amphitheaters and the designated seating areas of outdoor entertainment venues.

The law requires the posting of "no smoking" signs at every entrance to public places and places of employment where smoking is not allowed, as well as every entrance to outdoor areas where smoking is banned.
